Abstract
Cranial osteopathy (aka craniosacral therapy) is a palpation/manipulation-based medical practice conceived in the early 20th century. Supplementing our recent critique,[1] we review here the chapter titled "Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, " by King and Lay [2] in the new Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine (2nd ed.). Many consider this volume the American Osteopathic Association-sanctioned textbook for osteopathic medicine. Much evidence presented in this chapter was either overinterpreted or misinterpreted, and pertinent literature was overlooked. In the interest of the osteopathic profession and our students - and coincident with the best scientific evidence-this chapter should be revised extensively or deleted altogether.
Résumé
L’Ostéopathie crânienne (également nommée thérapie crâniosacrée ) est une pratique médicale de palpation/manipulation conçue au début du 20ème siècle. En complément de notre critique récente[1] , nous passons en revue ici le chapitre intitulé « Ostéopathie dans le champ crânien » par King et Lay [2] dans les nouvelles Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine (2nd ed.). Beaucoup d’évidences présentées dans ce chapitre sont sur-interprétées ou mal interprétées et la littérature pertinente a été négligée. Dans l'intérêt de la profession ostéopathique et de nos étudiants et coïncidant avec la meilleure preuve scientifique, ce chapitre doit être mis à jour rapidement ou supprimé complètement.
